First of all what is Cowboy Action Shooting?
To answer this we will borrow a statement from SASS, it is as follows:
Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West; single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and double barreled side by side, pre-1899 pump or lever action shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized Old West style. Contestants shoot in severel one, two, three or four gun stages (courses of fire) in which they fire on steel targets. Scoring is based on accuracy and speed. The truly unique aspect of cowboy action shooting is the requirement placed on authentic period dress. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character, or a Hollywood western star, and develop their costume accordingly.
What are the range rules for the Sun River Rangers ?
Our range rules are as follows:
1.) All shooters must shoot through a cronograph at their first shoot of the year, if you are within the velocity criteria you will be given a slip that states your velocity and need only show this slip at future shoots that year. If you are not whithin the velocity criteria you will be given two shoots to conform to the gudelines.
2.)Velocity criteria for shooting at our range (and most others)
Pistols: minimum = 650fps, Maximum = 1000fps
rifles: no minimum, maximum = 1400fps
3.) ALL bullets must be lead.
4.) Pump shotguns must have exposed hammer. Double barreled shotguns must be side by side with no ejectors(extractors are okay)
